American Sign Language
Sign language is using hand gestures (signs) to communicate. Infant signs are simple gestures used for communication with preverbal infants and toddlers. Many people are aware of the benefits of signing for hearing impaired children, however non hearing impaired children will benefit from sign language as well. While actively using sign language with young children I have witnessed an increase in communication, understanding and cognitive development. Using infant signs has been proven to minimize frustration and tantrums in young children. Simple signs for more, please, milk, all done, cat, dog, water, eat, wash hands and help have been taught to children too young for verbal communication. Debbie’s Preschool & Childcare incorporates infants signs into the daily routine encouraging the children to participate at the level appropriate for them.
